Two machines were employed, one machine, type
"D" on a trolley, of the pattern adopted by the Minister of the Molonics; and one larger machine, of the type employed for the fumigation of ships, mounted on a truck. The employment of this second apparatus was necessitated by the size of the dormitory to be disinfected.
On the 8th January, during a pouring rain, the class rooms and the second court were disinfected. Then the "S" apparatus was carried through Lacretelle Street to an office court adjoining the larger premises, and introduced into a narrow passage just under the windows of the building, at 5 o'clock in the pitch dark.
On the 9th the work began at half-past nine in the morning with the two machines "D" and "A". At mid- day the four large class rooms of the 1st Floor were
obser- filled with gas of an average percentage of 127, vations made on the burette giving % and 9% in the interior at about lm.50 above the ground.
On this day the examination of the infirmary had been carried out by the Managing Director of the Compagnie du Gaz Clayton. The rooms are situated on two upper floors, at respective heights of 25 and 30 metres above the ground of the entrance court, and at a distance of 500 metres from the first buildings fumigated. The operation was of the most delicate kind, by reason of the weight of the india-rubber piping which it was necessary to raise to this considerable neight. This operation was obliged to be postponed to Honday, the 11th, on account of the lateness of
the hour.
